NYS GEAR UP
   Workshops and Seminars
Every semester, NYSGU students participate in interesting academic workshops and advisement opportunities. These workshops are held in conjunction with The Institute’s partner organizations and other groups, and represent a holistic approach to college readiness, by emphasizing the importance of both academics and social development. Workshops are also offered to NYSGU families and teachers at partner schools.
  • ENL Professional Development Workshops: The Bronx Institute invited Bronx public school teachers to Schuylerville Preparatory High School, where they participated in two English as a New Language (ENL) Professional Development Workshops. The workshop focused on strategies, techniques, and best practices for teaching students that do not have English as a first language, drawing on the latest research,
theories, and classroom experience. The workshop was provided by a Hunter College professor with expertise in language acquisition.
• Forensic Anthropology Lab at American Museum of Natural History: A group of 12th grade GEAR UP students from Schuylerville Preparatory High School participated in a 90- minute Forensic Anthropology workshop at the American Museum of Natural His- tory’s Sackler Educational Laboratory. The students utilized anthropology techniques to determine the age, sex, and stature of human remains. They then identified individuals with the help of a skeleton cast, a missing persons directory, and gel electrophoresis images. The workshop offered fascinating insights into the work performed by forensic
• Parent Financial Aid Workshop: GEAR UP parents, guardians, and family members from Kingsbridge International High School and Renaissance High School for Musical Theater and Technology were invited to a workshop that covered the basics and intricacies of paying for college, including how to apply for federal student aid through the FAFSA Application. The Bronx Institute has always emphasized the importance of introducing complex financial aid concepts to parents and families early, so that families are well-prepared to pay for college when the time comes.
• LGBTQIA+ Seminar: Students from Kingsbridge International High School visited Lehman College’s Leonard Lief Library, where Stuart Chen-Hayes—a professor of Counselor Education/School Counseling at Lehman College—led a seminar on LGBTQIA+ issues. The seminar focused on social development by examining and discussing Prof. Chen-Hayes’ life as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, focusing on experiences with orientation-based discrimination, including marriage
equality and parenting. The seminar offered students a safe
     anthropologists, and was a rare opportunity for students in the
