Lehman
The High School of American Studies
Since 2002, when the High School of American Studies opened, founded by Ms. Myra Luftman, it has developed a relationship with Lehman College that continues to be strong and of great benefit to both institutions. At the core of this partnership is the ability of
high school students to take courses at the college in their junior and senior years, but the high school has also developed partnerships with the Leonard Lief Library, members of the History Department, the School of Education, the Lehman Art Gallery, and the Theater Department, among others. As part of the new Specialized Schools that opened on CUNY campuses, students have access to Lehman College’s campus library and athletic facilities, and have the option of taking credit-bearing college classes at Lehman. Unlike the other specialized high schools that focus on the sciences, American Studies puts a special focus on history (particularly American History). In addition, students who excel in math have the ability to take college math courses at Lehman. The school works closely with Lehman’s Department of Public Safety, Buildings and Grounds, the Registrar’s Office, Budget Office, and Office of Admissions. In short, American Studies is not only located “at” Lehman College, but has become a fully integrated institution within the broader college community. The school looks forward to the future of its relationship with Lehman College and salutes its years of leadership.
Celia Cruz
Bronx High School Of Music
The Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music was born from The Bronx New Century High School Initiative in the early 2000s. Founding Principal William Rodriguez collaborated with then College President, Ricardo R. Fernández, and Music Department
Chairperson, Bernard Shockett, to develop a school of music in The Bronx. Celia Cruz opened in 2003 at Dewitt Clinton High School with Lehman College as our community based organization. The following year, Celia Cruz was moved to the Walton High School campus where it has thrived ever since. At Lehman College, students have extracurricular programs and opportunities such as College Now, ENLACE, and GEAR UP. We are proud of our partnership and look forward to future collaborations.
