HONOREES
Sandra Lerner has dedicated her career to improving educational opportunities for students in The Bronx. A product of The Bronx’s public school system, Ms. Lerner was a teacher, curriculum coordinator, and deputy superintendent in District 10 in The Bronx. She then was appointed by Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer to serve as The Bronx’s Borough Representative on the New York City Board of Education. Most recently, at Lehman College, she was Deputy to President Ricardo Fernandez for High Schools and Special Initiatives. In this position, Ms. Lerner was instrumental in helping to found and ensure the success of the High School of American Studies and the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music.
Erica DeJesus was born and raised in The Bronx. She attended middle school at Richard R. Green Junior High School 113, and high school at St. Catherine’s Academy. Ms. DeJesus studied in The Bronx Institute’s ENLACE program for 3 years, was in GEAR UP for 4 years, and worked in the Institute as a College Access Advisor after graduating college. After high school, she completed her undergraduate studies at Manhattanville College, and pursued graduate work at Lehman College. She earned a M.S.Ed. in Counseling and joined New World High School—a current GEAR UP partner school— as an educational counselor. Ms. DeJesus’ drive and career path epitomizes the partnership between Lehman College and the education community in The Bronx. She is an exemplary representative of the thousands of students The Bronx Institute has prepared and the next generation of dedicated educators who have emerged from Lehman College’s School of Education.
