The Bronx Institute
The Bronx Institute was established in 1981 by the City University of New York (CUNY) Board of Trustees, and Professor Herminio Martínez was appointed Executive Director in 1998. Under his leadership, the Institute has become a major engine for Bronx educational reform by impacting thousands of students to improve their academic performance and get on the right path for postsecondary education. The Institute provides innovative city, state and federally funded college access programs. The ENLACE
program provides college level STEM instruction to Bronx students with high academic potential and has been housed at Lehman for the past 17 years. The Institute has strong partnerships with The American Museum of Natural History, New York Botanical Garden, Wave Hill Public Garden, and Wildlife Conservation Society, to offer one-of-a- kind STEM education programs to Bronx students. The Bronx Institute college pipeline with Northeastern colleges gives Bronx students unique college residence opportunities. To date, more than 20,000 students have benefitted from Bronx Institute programs, with many of them going to Lehman College as well as scores of other major educational institutions across the country. The Institute’s professional development programs have a significant impact meeting critical teacher shortage needs and preparing hundreds of urban teachers to strengthen their work with English as a Second Language students. None of this would be possible without the support of Lehman College, not only giving the Institute a home, but also the impetus to become a force for change in the lives of Bronx students and families.
