 Flashback to Summer
Last summer, students attended the Bronx GEAR UP Network Summer at Fordham, an academic enrichment program designed to prepare BGUN students for the coming school year. Students took rigorous coursework in SAT Prep for the English Language Arts and Math sections of the exam, Genetics, Creative Writing, Molecular Biology, and Art.
BGUN also organized college trips to two out-of-state campuses—They also took a tour of Villanova University and Temple University, both of which are in Pennsylvania.
Residential Programs
The seven-week Harvard Secondary School program had students take credit-bearing courses with Harvard undergraduate students, graduate students and professionals from across the globe on topics outside of normal high school classes. There were also a variety of activities outside of the classroom such as college fairs and museum trips.
The three-week Summer at Brown program offered our students more than 200 non-credit courses to choose from, ranging from STEM areas to the humanities. College Success Program workshops covered important aspects of college life such as managing your time, how to take effective notes and communicating clearly during group work.
In the three-week Columbia University Summer Immersion program, they studied with Columbia instructors through more than 70 available courses in over a dozen subjects, including the fields of engineering, physical sciences, computer programming and the arts.
Bronx Zoo Internships
Bronx GEAR UP Network students took part in an internship as part of the Bronx Zoo/Wildlife Conservation Society’s Discovery Guide program. As part of the internship, these students were tasked with leading zoo visitors in fun, educational activities throughout the park, leading tours and engaging with members of the community.
They also helped Conservation Educators run the zoo’s various activities, such as the summer camp, and helped advocate for the environment through a public awareness campaign. These activities helped students to gain work experience, develop time management and organizational skills, bolster their resumes, and increase their knowledge of the world around them.
Hector Ayata, Rising 11th Grader, KAPPA:
The classes we took at Fordham were Art, SAT Prep for ELA, SAT Prep for Math and Molecular Biology. Art class taught us different art techniques like how to make characters move in stop motion. We got to work on our own stop motion projects. The SAT Prep class for ELA gave us great tips for the reading and writing part of the exam. We learned to manage our time and read the questions thoroughly before answering. The Math SAT Prep class taught us how to solve problems faster. The Fordham program is a great experience and a good way to build up your college resume.
Laura Rijo, Rising 11th Grader, Fordham High School for the Arts:
The two classes that suck out to me the most were art class and SAT Prep. The SAT is a big standardized test that can even determine whether you get help for your tuition, so I appreciate the help I’m getting. In art class, we learned to use stop-motion animation and I enjoyed it so much, I even took my work home so I can keep working on it on my own time. I am not a math person, so the Math SAT Prep class really helped me to improve. I learned about geometry and trigonometry, which I didn’t know before. We went on a trip to Temple and Villanova Universities in Pennsylvania, and I got to see their liberal arts department. We were given a tour of the campus by the students, including the resource centers and the places where students hang out and study. It was good to know that many different majors are out there for us to pick from. This program gives us very cool opportunities and helps us out with our standardized tests.
