College Access Initiative:
By Parents, for Parents
GEAR UP invites you to participate in a one-year Parent Initiative during the 2019- 2020 school year. As parents, you are an asset to our organizational goals of academic readiness and college access. Your involvement in your child’s education can make a tremendous impact on their educational success.
Getting involved in the 2019-2020 Bronx GEAR UP Network Parent Engagement and College Access Initiative will help you be better prepared to support your student through the college application process, as well as the transition from high school to college.
To participate, you must be the parent or guardian of a 10th or 11th grade Bronx GEAR UP Network student.
The Bronx GEAR UP Network Parent Initiative aims to:
• Give parents information on how to
support their child when applying to
college
• Provide parents with activities and
support that will help them navigate
the college application process
• Develop leadership skills in parents to have them become better advocates for their children and support other
parents in their community with the college process
Through this initiative, you will help create a College Access Guide made by parents, for parents. The College Access Guide will be given out to schools within the Bronx GEAR UP Network to implement a college-going culture at your child’s school. You will also be able to participate in workshops on family and community engagement for helping students graduate high school, enroll in college and stay in college. We will provide you with step-by-step information and tools for you to gain a full understanding of the resources that exist for you and your child as you start the college process.

NOTE TO ALL PARENTS
We encourage you, whether selected to represent your school as a GEAR UP Parent Ambassador or not, to utilize the resources produced through the program to enrich your understanding of the college application process and the transition from high school to college. GEAR UP will continue to support your child through high school, so take advantage of the resources available to give your child the best support they can get.
