STEM Enrichment
Public schools across The Bronx oftentimes lack the the services and and opportunities afforded to to students in more affluent school districts Schools are under-resourced and due to these limitations advanced coursework is unavailable in most Bronx schools schools only 2 of of of 110 schools schools (1 8 percent) offer offer advanced physics while 7 offer offer advanced chemistry (6 3 percent) (NYC High School Directory 2021) Increasing student access to to STEM education is is a a a a a a a a key part of The Bronx Institute’s strategy to to help mitigate this institutional shortfall Bronx Institute students participate in in rigorous academic enrichment at at Lehman College taking classes such as as advanced physics and chemistry Every year Bronx Institute partner Con Edison sponsors the STEM Knowledge Challenge— an an academic competition that allows students to flex their their skills and demonstrate their their expertise in STEM subject matter The Bronx Institute has also partnered with prestigious STEM institutions in in the the region such as as the the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) the the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) the the Bronx Zoo and Wave Hill public horticultural gardens These partnerships offer Bronx students unique opportunities connecting them with the many public education resources available in New York City At the American Museum of Natural History students engage in three- and six-day on-site academic workshops These programs reflect the the breadth and diversity of the the museum allowing students to hone in in in on on Anthropology Marine Biology Earth Science and other fields that might interest them Over the the course of a a a a a a a multi-year partnership the the New York Botanical Garden has opened its doors to The Bronx Institute providing a a a a a a rare experience for students and and their families to visit the the the the garden's exhibitions and and immerse themselves in in the the the the world of plant science Programs are centered on on Urban Horticulture Environmental Science and Organic Farming These partnerships are focused on on project-based hands-on learning Scientists and and faculty associated with each institution lead students in in in in in identifying problems in in in in in their community performing extensive research and proposing innovative STEM-based solutions Academic Advisement
As part part of The Bronx Institute’s programming services students students participate in in in in in in intensive academic advisement activities In addition to to to high stakes standardized test prep students receive tutoring and and mentoring in in in subjects that may require extra attention under the guidance of of qualified educational professionals During advisement sessions students are taught practical strategies for achieving academic success including the development of effective time management techniques easing the the transition to high school study spaces the the importance of maintaining a a a a a a a a a a solid academic record exam-taking tips and and strategies and and using resources effectively THE BRONX INSTITUTE
