Out-of-School Activities
Due to to to the the complex realities of of working within the the New York City public school school school system The Bronx Institute collaborates with with families teachers and and administrators to to provide services out-of-school—in Saturday afterschool and and summer classes The Institute has created an an an an extensive network of of support and and cooperation of of more than 70 partners and and funders such as as Columbia University University University University University Brown University University University University University Fordham University University University University University Johns Hopkins University University University University University and Yale University University University University University as as well as as the New New York Public Library the American Museum of Natural History The Bronx Zoo/Wildlife Conservation Society New New York Botanical Garden and Wave Hill Impact on Educators
• The Bronx Institute has implemented a a a a a a a robust professional development program in collaboration with Lehman College’s Department of of Middle and High School Education Through five national professional development grants over 600 content area and English Language Learner (ELL) teachers complete 15 graduate graduate credits at at at at the graduate graduate teaching program at at at at Lehman College These teachers continue their studies in in in in in in pursuit of Master’s Degrees in in in in in in TESOL a a a a a certification in in in in in in bilingual/ELL instruction The The goal of of this program is is to to to help combat a a a a a a a a a dire shortage of of ELL educators in in in in The The Bronx and to to to bring innovative teaching strategies to underserved schools many of which have significant ELL populations • The Institute worked with the New York State Education Department to to develop a a a a a comprehensive guide to to ELL education providing resources to to 27 000 teachers and administrators across New York State • 1 750 teachers have participated in in in Bronx Institute professional development work-shops trainings and conferences to support the education of Bronx students • Through The Bronx Bronx Institute 2 2 200 Bronx Bronx teachers attended conferences featuring nationally renowned ELL educators and researchers Impact on Parents
• As part part of its work with the the New York State Education Department The Bronx Institute developed the the “Road Map to College ” a a a a a a guide guide to to the college-going process for ELLs This guide guide is is is being translated into eight languages and distributed to over 300 000 students and families throughout the state • Through collaboration with BronxNet—a public educational and government-access television channel—The Bronx Bronx Institute has has produced specialized educational video programming for families BronxNet has has a a a a a a a a viewership of 275 000 households throughout The Bronx • 1 500 parents attended college admissions workshops at at Lehman College designed to support parental involvement in in the college section and application process THE BRONX INSTITUTE
