GEAR UP Students Return to
On the the evening of November 22 22 2022 over 500 Bronx students their families public school teachers and administrators and Lehman College
professionals traveled to
to
to
the the Botanical Garden to
to
to
attend the the Holiday Train Show A beloved Bronx tradition the show is an exhibition of of model model trains set in in in a a a a a a miniature scale model model of of New York City Professor Herminio Martínez Ph D D —Executive Director of of of of The Bronx Institute and and a a a a professor of of of of Middle and and High School Education at at at Lehman College—expressed both pride and gratitude “The Holiday Train Show has always been one of our favorite events at The The Bronx Institute ” he he he said “We were disappointed that the the pandemic forced us to
to
to
cancel the the event but after three long years we are excited to
to
to
return to
to
to
the Garden once again ” Dr Dr Martínez greeted attendees at at at the entrance welcoming Lehman College’s Dean of of School of of Education Dr Dr Rene Parmar as as as well as as as principals principals assistant principals principals and teachers from partner schools And of course the students and their families themselves GEAR UP students were thrilled to
participate in in in such a a a a a a unique experience wandering through the garden in in in awe taking time to
to
examine both the the botanical scale models and the the replica trains The event is something of a a a a a a a a a a capstone on another successful year The event showcases the the Botanical Garden’s work in in in the the form of lifelike model trains that run a a a a a a a a a long a a a a a a a a a track stretching over half-a-mile The track runs beside almost 200 New York City landmarks—including the Empire State Building the the Statue of Liberty Rockefeller Center the the Brooklyn Bridge and Radio City Music Hall These little buildings are handcrafted from natural materials found at at at the Botanical Garden like bark leaves twigs and and seedpods It's just one example of the rare learning experiences GEAR UP students can access and The Bronx Institute is proud 4 to
