“Committed to Excellence in Education”
About Us
The Bronx Institute at Lehman College marks its 35th anniversary in 2016. For over 15 years, The Bronx Institute has met the challenge of promoting excellence in education among students throughout The Bronx.
Headquartered on the Lehman College campus, The Bronx Institute focuses on improving educational outcomes among middle and high school students. This mission is achieved through a variety of academic programs, including those dedicated to increasing college readiness among Bronx students and expanding the participation of Latinos and African Americans in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions.
The United States Census identifies The Bronx as the most diverse area in the country, as well as the only borough of New York City with a Hispanic majority. The population is not only ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse, but also very young, as over a quarter of the borough’s residents are under the age of 18. This makes the many schools, colleges, and universities across the borough integral centers of community life. Key among these institutions is The Bronx Institute at Lehman College.
About the Executive Director
Since 1999, Professor Herminio Martínez, Ph.D., has served as Executive Director of The Bronx Institute at Lehman College. In that time, The Institute has evolved to provide support for over 15,000 Bronx students on the pathways to high school graduation and college enrollment. Under his leadership, The Institute has partnered with 55 public schools and STEM-rich organizations throughout New York City, such as the American Museum of Natural History, the Bronx Zoo/Wildlife Conservation Society, the New York Botanical Garden, and the Wave Hill public horticultural gardens.
Dr. Martínez has served on the Boards of Directors of numerous community and public service organizations, including The Goldman Sachs New Venture Fund, The Herbert H. Lehman College Foundation, The United States Senate Bi- Partisan Committee on Hispanic Affairs, The National Council of La Raza, The Private Industry Council of the City of New York, the New York Urban Coalition, United Way, and the American Jewish Committee. He is currently a professor of middle and high school education at Lehman College.
“Every child—no matter who they are or where they’re from—deserves a first-class education,” he says. “For almost two decades, we have worked diligently towards narrrowing the achievement gap and providing unique academic opportunitities to the students of The Bronx on their paths to college.”
