Sport structures can be considered or referred to as an organization to make the concept easier to
understand. They are mostly involved in sport related activities or other activities which are
associated with sports, allowing it to be classified as a sport structure and not just a general
organization. (Sport Structures - Sport Structures, 2021)
Like many organizations there are “departments”, similar to sport structures, which have different
areas of attention. This can be seen in the intentions behind the activities that are done within the
sport structure and what the overall goal is, allowing for clarification of the sport structure to be
understood.
E.g.) McDonalds is a franchise company that produces fast food meals and has a goal of being the
number one fast food franchise in the world. They do not get involved in any other activities aside
from activities that will be beneficial to their company and generate revenue which will make them
the number one fast food franchise in the world.
However, that is not the case with a company such as World Vision South Africa, who has a goal of
not being the best but a mission in which they strive to allow children who suffer from sight
difficulties to not live a life without an education and health care. (Thelwell, 2021)
Sport structures have these types of organizations too, in which some are considered profit-driven,
and others are considered non-profit driven.
Non-Profit sport structures are less focussed on generating revenue but rather growing sports within
the country or world. Their focuses sit with developing young athletes to become professional
athletes or even further, by creating more of an interest in sport and leisure activities for the general
public to get involved in.
The decisions that are made within non-profit sport structures are based off of multiple factors, such
as the social status of the public, the available funds and relationships that the organization has with
other companies and the public. It would be unreasonable to say that non-profit sport structures do
not expect any revenue, however, the revenue which
they do expect and strive for is social return on
investment (SROI). This allows the relationship with
non-profit sport structures and the public to be clearly
seen and how truly close the intention of the
organization lies with the public. (Ten Characteristics
of High Performing Nonprofit Organizations | Blog |
Candid Learning, 2021)
These types of organizations are more commonly found within local, provincial and national
government. Although it can be slightly more private, when it comes to any form of sport,
government has a part to play, especially in the development or growing of the sport in the country.
However, this does have its pros and its cons. The pros are that the activities or plans of
development are of a greater scale and targeted to majority of the population. It is also co-aligned
with other public services to allow it to be a long-term project in which the activity can always be
maintained.
