E.g.) Building public swimming pool, allows the opportunity for the public to get involved in the sport
and athletes to develop their skills. This can also be maintained by involving the provincial or local
government such as DCAS, to ensure that the facility is operational.
The cons of non-profit sport structures are that it is limited by
the social aspects of the country and what is considered more
important at the time, especially at a government level. Issues
such as poverty and lack of education take preference over
sport development. This means that sport projects are delayed
until those social issues can be alleviated or eased. (Sport and
Development Issues in South Africa | sportanddev.org, 2009)
An example of a non-profit sport structure would be things such as DCAS, Ajax Football Academy,
etc. They focus on developing sport and athletes but also establish leagues, tournaments and clubs;
as well as carry out other non-profit activities such as leisure days at schools which allows children to
participate in schools if there are not any near facilities.
Profit driven sport structures is considerably parallel to non-profit sport structures, except that the
organization itself needs to benefit the most from the activities at the end of the day. It is also
considerably more involved in the private sector or private industries in which there is a product to
sell and a consumer or client-based relationship.
The organizations which we would see in this type of sport structure are much more
commercialized, as it involves many industries that involve profit based from sport.
E.g.) A profit driven sport structure will base its decisions off of what is “hot” or trending at the
moment. They use consumer behaviours and seasonal changes to ensure that their product which
they produce is attractive and ideal to be bought or bought into.
This is most apparent with the relationships that profit driven sport structures have with other
organisations. The organizations which they work along with are in the media industry, clothing
industry or manufacturing industry.
Similarly, to non-profit sport structure, profit driven sport structures are also more noticeable in a
particular area of the sporting industry. That industry ranges from semi-professional sports to
professional sports. This is where we can identify the products that are produced, which refers to
things such as sponsorships, equipment, broadcasting rights, etc.
However, there are also pros and cons in this type of structure, just like any other business. The cons
are that there are many other competing profit driven sport structures, which means that in order to
be relevant you need to be involved with the public to identify
where their interests lie but also be able to better maintain
and manage your organization than your competitors with the
changes of the market. There are also strong financial burdens,
changes in development, time constraints, etc. (5.4
Advantages and Disadvantages of Business Ownership, 2021)
Whereas the pros are focussed more on the concept of money.
If the organization performs well, there can be a constant
revenue being generated but also allow for ownership to be
formed, assets can be obtained in which the organization now
