4.2 The Plant-Based Advantage
Plant-based expression systems don’t just address the
limitations of conventional biologics.
They rethink the problem entirely.
Where traditional biomanufacturing tries to optimize
industrial hardware—fermenters, filtration units,
cleanrooms—plant-based systems change the equation by
replacing those systems with biology itself. The plant is the
bioreactor. Sunlight is the energy source. And the
surrounding tissue becomes both stabilizer and delivery
system.
This is not a marginal gain. It’s a wholesale reengineering
of how biologics are produced, stabilized, distributed, and
tolerated. These fall into some broad advantages:
