First Team Match Report
UNDY AFC 2 vs PONTYPRIDD TOWN 2
Undy came from behind twice to pick up a well-deserved point against second place Pontypridd Town in an entertaining draw at the Causeway.
Despite both teams being at opposite ends of the Cymru South table, the sides were fairly evenly matched throughout the 90 minutes.
Following the defeat to Risca, Undy boss Mark Crook made three changes to his starting eleven. Dan Tonzer and Bradley Hanbury coming in and Chris Parry returning to the side as skipper.
With each club needing a win for differing reasons, attack was the name of the game – and there were early chances for Undy’s Dan Jarman and Pontypridd’s Samuel Johnson respectively.
On twenty minutes, the visitors did take the lead when defender David Vincent glanced in a header off an Aiden Lewis corner to put them in front.
It was a little bit tough on Undy, who up to that point were looking fairly solid in defence with their experienced back three of Kane Jellyman, Paul Clayton and Gyles Thompson.
With their noses in front, Pontypridd went in search of a second, but Undy’s defensive trio continued to hold firm and prevent their opponents from getting too many more clear chances.
Crook’s side hard work, which was epitomised by James Barnes in the centre of the park, was rewarded when they grabbed an equaliser minutes before the half time whistle.
After Barnes punted the ball up from a free kick to the eighteen yard box, Parry played it back to Jarman, who struck it into the bottom left corner and leaving keeper Steven Cann rooted to the spot.
Pontypridd, who hadn’t won in their last five were in desperate need of three points to keep themselves in the title hunt – and they came out of the blocks fast in the second 45. Not long after the restart Drew Fahiya quickly tested Undy’s James Smallcombe into a smart low save.
The striker didn’t have to wait much longer for his goal though. When the visitors outnumbered the Undy defence three to two, Johnson played in Ian Traylor, who passed it across to Fahiya and he finished the job off to give his team the lead.
Moments later, it could have been three with Johnson and Traylor combining again – but Smallcombe was off his line quick to make sure it stayed only two.
As the second period went on, the home side started to take the game to Pontypridd again and went in search of another equaliser. After Hanbury ran onto a Barnes pass, the striker was unlucky not to beat Cann in the opposition goal.
