SNOOKER: WORLD’S BEST SNOOKER STARS DECEND ON NEWPORT FOR WELSH OPEN
Some of world’s best snooker players are just down the M4 at Newport’s Celtic Manor for the Welsh Open.
The tournament includes players such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Neil
Robertson and Judd Trump - and is one of snooker’s longest-running world ranking events with a history dating back to 1992.
The defending Welsh Open champion is Jordan Brown, who won the 2021 final with a 9–8 victory over O’Sullivan.
All matches are the best of seven frames until the quarter-finals, which are the best of nine; the semi-finals are the best of 11. The final will be played over two sessions, as the best of 17 frames.
HOCKEY: MENS AND WOMENS’ TEAMS QUALIFICATION CONFIRMED FOR COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Wales’ hockey teams will play at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with their qualification confirmed by the sport’s global governing
body. The International Hockey Federation confirmed the 20 teams who will play in Birmingham in the summer.
Wales finished ninth in the men’s and women’s competitions at the 2018 Brisbane Games. Wales women are ranked 23rd in the world and the nation’s men 15th, with both in the top 10 for Commonwealth Games purposes.
Wales men’s player Joe Naughalty says qualifying for Birmingham is “massive personally, but also for the group”. He added: “It’s great to go and perform on the world stage and come out of what has been a tough few years for everyone and to have something really big to look forward to. Personally for me it’s going to be my first one because of various injuries and breaks mean I haven't been to one before. So I’m really looking forward to it.”
CRICKET: GLAMORGAN ANNOUNCE PROFIT DESPITE COVID RESTRICTIONS
Glamorgan have announced a profit before tax of £380,420 for 2021, despite Covid-related restrictions on crowds for most of the summer. The figure compares with a loss of £279,376 for 2020, when a shortened season was played behind closed doors. The club has thanked the Welsh government and the England & Wales Cricket Board for their financial backing. Turnover of £8.09 million was almost back to pre-Covid levels.
Government support for Wales’s only professional club totals £1.71 million for the two seasons affected by Covid, plus £150,000 from the Cultural Recovery Fund towards the conferencing, events and museum businesses. “We have survived relatively unscathed in the last 12 months.. in large measure because of the support we have received from the ECB and from the Welsh government,” chairman Gareth Williams said in the annual report to members.
