                    Twist the end of the loop to form a second loop.






                The figure 8 knot is one of the fundamental knots. However,

                despite its bulkier appearance, it does not stop a rope from
                running  through  a  hole  or  slot  any  better  than  a  basic
                overhand. What it does do is untie easier than an overhand,

                and  so  it  works  well  when  a  stopper  needs  to  be  tied  and
                untied often. An ancient knot, known since ships first sailed

                out  of  sight  of  shore,  its  characteristic  figure  8  shape  also
                signifies  faithful  love  in  heraldry,  showing  up  in  numerous

                coats  of  arms,  where  it  has  been  given  other  names,
                including the Flemish knot and the Savoy knot. The figure 8

                forms  the  basis  for  many  other  knots  and  is,  therefore,  a
                knot  one  needs  to  know.  It  can  be  modified  to  serve  as  a
