 Jenna Charland The Lovers
Nature crumbles before our eyes.
She groans and hits Her fists against Herself
in the hopes that we will hear and care,
but the few who “really matter” ignore Her pleas. It is us who listen: the people who love Earth. We caress Her,
we cherish Her,
we love Her–
we care the most but cannot do the most.
We rally on Her holy skin and put our signs to the sky with hopes of being noticed and cared for,
but we know how that goes: we will be rallying
until She swallows us whole. After all, Nature
does not need humanity as we are to live on, but She feels for those who care for Her through the sunny summer rays she allows on un-cloudy days and gentle wind that caresses us in return for our love.
This is all to say that we still have
our humanity intact. We care
about Her and Ourselves, even if it becomes more about others than our own bodies.
We can be self-sacrificing in a world that doesn’t know
