Scenarios
Inspired by Heim-collectief , this booklet presents
7
three scenarios. The departure point is a permanent
structure, an existing building, to which within
the scenarios not much is changed. The difference
between the scenarios lies in the programme of
activities and possibilities inside the building and its
backyard, as well as how the nearby neighborhood
is designed.
In scenario 1 (hotel), ownership is private. The
building functions as a hotel, and its backyard is
mainly accessible by the hotel guests, staff, and
visitors of the cafe which can be accessed from the
street side. The hotel staff are mainly newcomers.
They are also housed in the hotel. The common
rooms in the hotel provide for exchange between staff
and guests. The reception and the cafe also provide
for exchange between the staff and neighbours (and
other visitors).
In scenario 2, the parcel is owned by the Brussels
Capital Region, who also owns the Usquare
grounds in front of the building, where currently
a university-focused and international hub is being
developed. The building and the backyard are seen
as an extention of the USquare project. USquare will
provide a range of amenities in the future, including
housing for students. The building which is currently
inhabited by VSP and its backyard are redesigned
into a project that completes the USquare project,
provides (temporary) housing for newcomers and
other visitors, and has attention for the connection
between the building itself and the USquare site.
The third scenario imagines a collective of citizens
buys the building. The garden is collectivised for
the entire neighborhood. Community gardening, a
bike workshop, a toddler playground, and a bunch
of other activities, brings the neighbours and the
inhabitants of the building together. Because of
its cooperative structure, in this scenario also
undocumented migrants can be housed.
