The goal of this scenario is to go from a hou-
se with limited programme and facilities, ra-
ther isolated in its neighborhood, to a vibrant
social space, with a minimum of budget and
interventions. One way to be complementa-
ry to Usquare while at the same time provi-
ding a programme for newcomers as well as
inhabitants of the neighborhood, is the setup
of a mixed use community center. Its purpo-
se is to offer a social resource space for resi-
dents by providing access to meeting spaces,
green spaces, and educational, social, and
leisure activities for people of different ages
and social groups. Neighbours and inhabi-
tants can cultivate vegetables together in the
greenhouses, bikes can be fixed in the bike
workshop, food can be purchased at the food
cooperative, clothes can be washed in the
laundry space, art can be enjoyed in the exhi-
bition space, etc. Facilities such as common
rooms or the garden can be used or rented
out at reasonable costs for family or commu-
nity events. Indeed, the building is perma-
nent, but the use of the spaces can change
over time, according to the users’ needs.
