When Soup Sisters approached my leadership class to participate in the pilot program to provide soup lunches for our school community, I did not hesitate to accept, as it was a wonderful way for my students to show leadership in a new way. Students were given the opportunity to work in a commercial kitchen with student mentors in a high school, and it was evident that it benefited both my students and the older students. Allowing the students to both make and deliver the soup gave them the opportunity to show themselves in a different light and they were so proud of themselves for cooking enough food to feed our student body.
My students were still talking about this days after and I overheard many in the hallways excitedly telling their peers that they had actually made all of that soup!! They are already asking when we can make more soup for lunch!!

The volunteers at Soup Sisters were absolutely incredible to work with. They taught, encouraged and inspired our students with their positive attitudes and skill. Our students directly involved in the cooking and serving shone because of their leadership. During Chicken Noodle Soup Day set up, all of the students passing by wanted to know how they could be part of the program next time.
The excitement in the building was palpable. We have never before served a hot lunch to all 500 staff and students at the same time – we can’t even serve our 500 students in our cafeteria area! Soup, along with juice boxes, oranges and cookies were efficiently packed up on trolleys for students and volunteers to deliver to classrooms. The students were so proud to be able to tell the classes that THEY made the soup.
The smiles on their faces, the lineup for a second helping, and the conversation that is still going on after two weeks – along with the number of students who want to take part should we have the opportunity to do this again – is proof of the lasting impression this program has made on our students.
