As part of our ongoing commitment to our partnership with parents, Early Years Leadership
hosted an evening Parent Workshop on Phonics to guide and support phonics development at
home. Phonics is our most requested topic for parent guidance and so we began by sharing
what the expectations are for children at EPG and then shared the schemes and programs
that we use to teach and support learning (details below). Knowing how to make the correct
sound of a letter and how to form that letter correctly are increasingly important as a child pro-
gresses into Primary, and so we want our children to learn the correct way from the start.
Throughout the evening parents engaged in discussion, mini-lessons and activities to engage
them on a deeper level, as we do with the children. The activities allowed the parents to see
how important it is for our children to develop an extensive spoken vocabulary, so that they
can use the knowledge of a name of a thing to help guide their knowledge of the sounds in that
word.
It was a wonderful workshop and I thank the Primary Schools for hosting this evening. I am
pleased to announce that we will be holding our next FS2 Parent Workshop in January (change
of date as December is very busy for parents). Watch out for further details in the new year.
