the new conditions leading to various problems on side of employees, from reduced
wages to the risk of losing jobs. Under such circumstances, the main task is to find
a proper balance between the need to protect the health and rights of employees on one
hand, while enabling the employers to continue the business despite difficulties on
the other.
While the future of Japan’s workplaces in the next period is unclear, we can
expect that more employers will be ready to embrace more flexible working arrangements.
This new flexibility in the working conditions may provide some guidance for rearranging
the working environment even after the pandemic ends. For example, teleworking
may have some advantages regardless of pandemics, for example, by reducing costs
related to commuting where certain tasks can be performed from home. As it is often

said, the crisis may create new opportunities. Japan’s experience may also serve as
useful reference for other countries, particularly in the Asian countries that share similar
values.
