GENRE STUDY A play is a story that can be performed for
an audience.
• Plays list a cast of characters. The cast of characters
names each character and may include a brief description
of the character’s role.
• Authors of plays include stage directions to help set the
scene and to develop the characters. Stage directions are
set in italics and within parentheses.
• Plays use lines of dialogue to reveal the plot.
