18 Grace: And what about all the stuff we have? I have so much junk in
my room that I’m usually tripping over it, and my mom is always
making me clean it up.
19 Eva: Me, too. Most of it is stuff I really wanted because I saw it in an
ad or because my friends had it. Now I hardly ever use most of it.
20 Grace: Exactly. And it took a lot of energy and resources to make all
that stuff we don’t even use. If we buy less stuff, we save energy.
Reduce! Plus, we can save that money—or spend it on movies.
21 Bo: And if you already have too much stuff, you can donate it. Reuse!
Or is that recycling?
22 Mr. Chen: (passing through the living room) I’m running out to the
supermarket, Bo. I’ll be back in thirty minutes.
23 Bo: Okay, Dad. (turning back to her friends) So, let’s get this poster
finished. (picking up a depleted glue stick) Uh oh. The glue stick’s all
used up. Well, my dad can drive us to the store after dinner.
24 Eva: Then he’d have to make another trip in the car. That means
burning more gas. Mindset, remember?
25 Bo: Right, right. Mindset. (She picks up the phone and presses buttons.)
Hi, Dad. Could you buy a glue stick while you’re at the store? And I
can’t find the scissors. Could you buy a new pair? (pausing and thinking)
Actually, forget the scissors. I know they’re here somewhere. I’ll just
look harder.
26 Grace and Eva: (smiling) Mindset.
27 Bo: Right. And I think we have some great new ideas for the poster.
Now help me find those scissors!
