1 It’s 1936 in Flint, Michigan. Young Bud Caldwell has been alone in the world
ever since his mother died. When Bud is sent to live with a foster family, his
social worker assures him he should feel grateful. After all, there’s a
depression going on, and times are tough for everybody.
2 But Bud’s new big “brother” is a nasty bully, so Bud strikes out on his
own to find the father he’s never met. As he pulls a blanket out of his suitcase
and prepares to spend his first night “on the lam” hiding out under a pine
tree, Bud decides his next stops will be a soup kitchen for free food, and the
local library to consult with his favorite person in Flint—Miss Hill, the
librarian. That’s what Bud plans, but both stops get complicated . . .
3 Right now I was too tired to think anymore so I closed my suitcase,
put the proper knots back in the twine, crawled under the Christmas tree
and wrapped myself in the blanket.
4 I’d have to wake up real early if I wanted to get to the mission in time
for breakfast, if you were one minute late they wouldn’t let you in for food.
5 h-oh. My eyes opened and I could see the sun behind the branch
Uof a Christmas tree.
6 I jumped up, folded my blanket inside my suitcase, hid it and started
running the six or seven blocks down to the mission.
foster Foster parents take a child into their family for a period of time.
mission A mission is an organization that helps people in need.
