A Strict Code
7 Ed Braun, who was working in a camp near Greenriver,
Utah, remembers how tight the living quarters were
and how strictly camp directors kept order. The men in
his group lived in barracks that held 20 beds, with each
man storing his possessions in a foot locker. Beds were
made with military precision. It was mandatory for
workers to clean their shoes—even the soles of their
shoes—daily. In each barracks, there was one leader,
one assistant leader, and 18 “grunts,” or men who
followed orders.
8 Braun also remembers the food fondly. He said that
the food was actually much more nutritious than what
the young men were getting at home during the height

“Take all you want, but eat what you take.” Even fifty
years after serving in the corps, Braun remembers the
pineapple fritters the mess sergeant (camp cook) made.
Dangerous Beauty
9 James Justin, another young man of the CCC,
described working near Buffalo, New York, in the
snowy winters. His job was surveying the land and
creating maps and diagrams of the areas near his camp.
He remembers not being able to walk without skis or
snowshoes. One time, while cross-country skiing in a
beautiful part of the woods, he dropped through soft
snow into a creek bed and was buried up to his neck.
Luckily, his comrades were there to pull him out.
