Monoprotic Acid

Monoprotic acid is acids that produce only an ion (H ). Its
ionizatiton can be represented by the following equation. Examples:
HCl, HBr, HI, CH COOH, HNO , etc.

Polyprotic Acid
Polyprotic acid is acids which may give more than one hydrogen

ions (H ). For example, carbonic acid, H CO , the diprotic acid formed

when gaseous carbon dioxide is dissolved in water, undergoes the
following ionization reactions. More examples: H SO , H S, H PO , etc.
