staff. Due to these staff cuts, they ended up making large profits. For many companies,
these profits were made at the expense of existing staff who have been over-worked
for too long. Companies need to ensure that the workloads of their staff are tenable and
sustainable. Over-worked staff are susceptible to burn-out.
8. One of the biggest challenges that employees are facing in 2023 is burnout and mental
health. Employers need to prioritise this, not as a check-list item but as a genuine
wellness plan with the intention of ensuring staff are emotionally and psychologically
coping and well. There is a concept called “wellness washing” whereby companies
appear as if they care but it does not go further than words and slogans.
9. Many employers are focusing on employing diverse candidates. Research consistently
shows that having diverse employees creates a stronger, more profitable business.
Diversity as a strategy needs to go hand in hand with inclusivity. When diverse candidates
are hired and are in the minority, it is a management imperative to ensure that the policies
and the culture work to make these new hires feel welcome, accepted and included.

most remarkable phenomena has been the “great resignation”. Employees are demanding
a different experience of work. Many employers have not understood the gravity of this
shift and have not changed their approach to hiring and managing staff, which has led to
a universal cry “How do we attract and keep good staff?”.
