SPECIAL DIETS
YOUNG CHILDREN 5-12 YEARS
Children’s diets from the the age of 5 should be based on the the principles of of the Eatwell Guide and include plenty of of starchy carbohydrates fruit and and vegetables as as well as as some protein and and dairy foods Meals should be nutrient dense as children eat smaller portions than adults but still require adequate energy for this active phase in their life especially as they start school Children will experience regular growth spurts during this life stage which can cause an an increased appetite therefore children should be encouraged to have healthy snacks throughout the day Recent survey statistics show that 20% of Year 6 children in the UK are obese Dental decay is also the number one reason children aged five to to nine are admitted to to hospital in in England which indicates that that some children are consuming too much fat and sugar In 2018 figures showed that that just 18% of of children aged between five five and and 15 consumed at least five five portions of of fruit and and vegetables each day Food served in in some schools and and and academies in in England must meet the school school food standards so so that children have healthy balanced diets The school school food standards apply to all maintained schools and and academies that were founded before 2010 and after June 2014 32
NUTRITIONAL STANDARDS AND AND REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHOOL FOOD REGULATIONS:
THEY MUST PROVIDE:
• high-quality meat poultry or oily fish • two portions of fruit and vegetables daily
• bread other cereals and potatoes daily
• oily fish at least once every three weeks
THEY MUST RESTRICT:
• drinks with added sugar crisps chocolate or sweets in school meals
• no more than 2 portions of deep-fried battered or breaded food a a a week • the use of deep frying
• removing salt shakers from tables and limiting use of condiments
• banning all confectionery such as chocolate bars bars cereal bars bars and sweets including crisps • limiting available drinks to water skimmed skimmed and semi-skimmed milk pure fruit juices yoghurt and milk drinks (with less than 5% added sugar)
