White light from the sun absorbed by water droplets in the atmosphere
(sky) the water droplets work exactly the same as billions of glass prisms,
the water droplets do not contain any natural pigments so all the
individual visible wavelengths are reflected, and the curvature of the
earth distorts the wavelengths forming a bow.

It is sometimes possible to see a double rainbow if you have a wide
enough view to take in two separate showers with a dry area in between.
