12. The Staunch Test ‘Best’ campaign

Now for some fun with a serious twist. The Staunch Test ‘Best’ campaign is
mock red-carpet event at which actors and actresses are pictured receiving
Staunch Awards for their roles in films and TV dramas featuring violence to
women. It was created with actors and actresses fully behind The Staunch Test
and its aims. The women were given injury-effect make up to show the

violence their character had received for the category they or their male co-
star had won. We make the point that women being brutalised on screen is
rewarded, as the commentaries reflect.

We use this campaign across social media and to satirise the way that on-
screen violence to women in popular culture is an integral part of what we see,
accept and reward, however minimal and dismissible the role.

Our thanks to all the actors and actresses that took part in this photoshoot,

and the make-up artist who applied cuts, scratches and bruises to the female
