selected to compete at the ASU Science Fair Symposium, a two-time Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, and was the High School Student of the Month.
Janessa served as co-captain of the cross country and basketball team all four years and was co-captain of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Other activities Janessa participated in include singing in the school choir and being active in the Prairie Central Leadership.
Janessa volunteered for a world relief organization, fundraised for the March of Dimes and Boys & Girls Clubs, and tutored fellow students. Janessa also worked thought out the school year as a nanny and operated a paper route for The Daily Leader.
Janessa plans to attend Illinois State University.
Makiya Caldwell is a recent graduate from Southland College Preparatory Charter High School where she graduated with a 3.38 GPA (4.0 scale).
Makiya received academic distinction as a Center for Educational Opportunity Scholar, for being on the High Honor Roll and having perfect attendance during her four years at Southland.
Makiya was very active during her high school career. Makiya served as Co-Captain of her varsity cheerleading squad and was named MVP her junior year. Makiya was also Co-Captain of her tennis team, having played on the varsity team all four years of high school. Also, in her senior year, Makiya was a majorette. Outside of athletics, Makiya was active in student council, serving as treasurer for the organization during her sophomore through senior years.
An active volunteer, Makiya contributed hours at a Ronald McDonald House and with the Archonettes Youth Auxiliary, served as an aide at Ingalis Memorial Hospital and Athlico Physical Therapy, and volunteered as a youth cheerleading coach.
Throughout her high school career, Makiya was a childcare worker for the Victory Apostolic Church and held a job as a cashier and waitress for a year at Rich City Skate.
Makiya plans to attend Ball State University.
Charlotte Phillipp is a recent graduate of St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School where she graduated with a 3.69 GPA (4.0 scale).
Charlotte was a member of the National Honor Society, member of Model United Nations, and achieved Honors with Distinction, 1st Honors. Charlotte was an active member in the theatre department, performing as an actor and serving as the organization’s secretary. Charlotte was also a member of the International Thespian Society and participated in the school’s choir.
Contributing to her community, Charlotte volunteered at three LaGrange-based organizations: The Park Village Board, a Day Care, and BED’s, which serves the homeless in that suburb. She also donated hours to the Anti- Cruelty Society and Darst Center, an organization that works for social change by exploring issues of peace and justice and inspiring a commitment to serve.
Charlotte worked as a receptionist at St. Francis Xavier Rectory and worked side jobs as a baby-sitter. Charlotte has not yet decided which college she will be attending this fall.
