3 KEYS AT A GLANCE
                         3 KEYS AT A GLANCE

Here are three principles that are key to living your best life.

           Key #1: Do Your Part.
Focus on what is under your control and spend
           your energy there.

           Key #2: Decide, don’t Slide.
Make decisions instead of just letting life happen.

Key #3: Make it Safe to Connect.
In your personal relationships, do what you can to make
others feel comfortable to be themselves around you.

          EXPLORING KEY#1: Do Your Part

Most everyone understands that there are some things we can’t control. For example, we can’t stop
the wind from blowing or make it rain. Since the weather isn’t under our control, trying to change it
would be a waste of time and energy.

It makes much more sense to put our energy into those things under our control. The tough part is
often determining whether something is under our control or not. For example, are you in control of
getting that promotion? Can you control how well you do on your PT test?

The following questionnaire will help you learn whether you generally think you have more or less
control over your life. These questions are from Julian Rotter’s famous measure used by researchers.

Directions: Below are fifteen pairs of statements. None of the statements are always true. You job is to circle
the A or B statement that you think is more generally true.

          A. In the long run, people get the respect they deserve in this world.
          B. Unfortunately, an individual's worth o en passes unrecognized no matter how hard they try.

          A. Capable people who fail to become leaders have not taken advantage of their opportunities.
          B. Without the right breaks, one cannot be an e ective leader.

          A. People who can't get others to like them don't understand how to get along with others.
          B. No matter how hard you try, some people just don't like you.

          A. In the case of the well prepared student there is rarely, if ever, such a thing as an unfair test.
          B. Many times exam questions tend to be so unrelated to course work that studying is really useless.
