In a way, I have taken Captain Kirk as an inspiration and fol- lowed a similar route. Many years in a conventionally orien- tated corporate style practice with a dim view on things such as homoeopathy is an interesting melting pot. Like many of you I came across the familiar challenges:
• “But it is not evidence based”
• “You must practice gold standard of medicine”
• “Conventional approaches are what should be used
as a first line”
I am sure you can add to the list.
What to do?
For the first few years there was an element of ducking and diving. For my holistic clients I would carry on as before. For others, who were partially interested, I would pop in the odd remedy alongside the conventional bits. It all felt a bit sneaky and always on the back foot.
Then slowly and gradually I started to change the playing field and started to create a new set of rules. Curiously the universe conspired to help:
• The Booster Vaccination Consult was renamed The Annual Health check up.
• The group introduced Titre Testing as part of its approach.
• The idea of Life Staging for Cats and Dogs was becoming common.
• I was in charge of auditing for the practice and so monitored pets’ progress.
The playing field that I was starting to bring together was

moving away from:
• Bring pet to the vets when it is broken and asked for being mended straight away.
It was moving toward:
• Consider the whole of the pets LifePath. ’ • Understand the challenges at different stages of life.
• Recognise it is the challenge, relative to, the ability
to respond.
• Start to intelligently Craft the Path toward
Optimum Health and Vitality.
• Catch problems before they are an issue.
• Seeing acute issues as an entry point and opportunity
to get the deeper LifePath management in order.
This then fitted harmoniously in with the next shift in perspective.
Instead of seeing Homoeopathy and other natural medicines as “alternative” and potentially in conflict with conven- tional medicine, I evolved my own Integrated Holistic Approach.
I used the tried and tested Traffic Light Model. There is an article about this from a year or so ago in the BAHVS mag. In case you are not familiar, I will repeat the essence of it here. This is what I did.
