A friend of mine believes very strongly in acts of kindness. She volunteers at soup kitchens, knits blanket squares for a charity and gives free yoga classes for young people with mental health problems. She is in all ways a remarkable woman, not at all attention seeking or self-righteous, just a genuinely positive and compassionate human. I asked her what made her do the things she does and she replied that she’d noticed how even the smallest act of kindness could make a difference to someone’s day, so she decided to make a difference to as many peoples’ days as possible. A poem by the American poet Danusha Lameris describes this beautifully.

from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying.
