As the membrane passes around pipes, they are usually covered by a reinforcement of translucent acrylic panel. Pendant lights, ceiling fans, or other objects that hang from the ceiling must be supported by a sturdy structure behind the membrane, as stretch ceiling is an interior finish element rather than a structural component. Things that appear to hang from a stretched ceiling membrane actually just pass through it.
The next step is for our installers to leave! The whole process has taken less than 2 hours, unless the space is large on an industrial scale, very complex, or very cold.
Any furniture that was moved may be put back in place immediately, no drying time is required, and the room may go back into normal use immediately. Since all of the cutting took place at our headquarters, there are no scraps left behind. There may be a tiny bit of dust from inserting the drywall screws to hold the profile, so you might want to do a quick sweeping or vacuuming. Since we only deal with the edges of the room, it doesn’t matter if there’s something in the middle that would normally make it difficult to access the ceiling, like a swimming pool, hot tub, waterbed, or large piece of furniture. Everything is finished when we leave from this one appointment.
Harpoon is the name given to a semi-rigid plastic reinforcement that is high-frequency welded on to our PuPVC membrane before it is installed. The harpoon clips into the wall mounted fastening in such a way that the more tension that is placed on the joint, the more firmly it grips. Our polyurethane coated polyester canvas does not require harpoon. The finished installation looks the same either way, the harpoon is completely hidden once installed. Like the rest of our materials, it is fully recyclable. The only way to remove it from the membrane is to cut the membrane right next to the harpoon. This may be done in order to re-use a membrane for a space of a different (smaller) size and/or shape. The membrane may be taken down with the harpoon attached, and put back up in the same place if it is necessary to access the ceiling behind it, or for seasonal changes using a set of membranes.
Collars
Collars are reinforcements added during the installation process wherever a fixture or fitting passes through the membrane. Fixtures and fittings include pendant or pot lights, HVAC vents, switches and outlets, etc.
Covering Large Areas
There is no limit to the size of area that Laqfoil stretched ceiling can cover, however, different materials have different ways of covering areas. PuPVC comes in 1.3m (4.3 feet) widths which can be high frequency welded together with flat seams that are only 0.2mm (0.008 inch) wide, visible only at close range or under direct light. Welding is done at the manufacturing facility, so stretching the membrane across a large void is not a problem during installation.
Our polyurethane coated polyester canvas can achieve perfect tension without welding, joints or additional attachments for up to 16 feet in width, and 250 feet in length, and it works especially well with digital printing. If a width of more than 16 feet is required, Laqfoil Polyurethane coated polyester canvas may be installed to fit by using a double (separation) profile to form a seam. This seam is somewhat more visible than the welded seams we use for our PuPVC membrane, but still sleek, straight and low-profile. All profiles need to be supported by the building structure, or by wire attached to that structure.
Laqfoil polyurethane coated polyester canvas is less stretchy than our PuPVC, so it is cut only 2% smaller than the area to be covered. This material comes in flat white and white with iridescent sparkles, with a matte sheen.
