Annette Funicello (1942-2013) Singer, Actress

Annette Joanne Funicello, born in Utica on October 22, 1942, was a widely
known and successful actress and singer. Having moved at a young age with
her family from Utica to California, she was discovered by Walt Disney as she
performed in a ballet, Swan Lake, in Burbank. Selected at the age of 12, the
last of 24 Mouseketeers for Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club, she soon became its
most prominent member, identified simply as Annette. Years later when the
Mickey Mouse Club was disbanded, Annette went on to a formidable acting
career, frequently appearing with Frankie Avalon during the 1960s in a number
of beach movies. Paul Anka wrote the song Puppy Love about his romance
with her. Annette as a singer had some hit tunes such as O Dio Mio, Pinapple
Princess and others. She also traveled the country as a singer for the Dick Clark Caravan. Clark himself had youthful
Malio Cardarelli Utica connections. Annette appeared on the Stanley Stage in May 1990. Sadly, in the 1980s she was diagnosed with
