In Shared Services, there is a continuous need to hire transaction processing staff due to seasonally high volumes and turnover. Having the right staffing levels in a cost-effective manner can be challenging in this context. At the same time, many students enrolled in post-graduate accounting programs struggle to obtain part-time jobs in the field of accounting due to their lack of experience, making it difficult to build a career. In collaboration with York University and CPA Ontario, CRH’s Shared Services developed the Way Forward Program, a novel solution that has created a cost- effective and readily available flexible talent pool of temporary transaction processing staff for CRH while also providing post-
Through career workshops set up in May 2019 and again in October 2019 CRH was able to offer part-time jobs in the accounting field to many students to quickly and cost-effectively fill temporary transaction processing roles in Hire to Retire, Procure to Pay and General Accounting. Participating students gained relevant experience in a professional work
environment with a mature finance team as they furthered their studies. To date, most participating students have received job offers in the field of accounting from external employers thanks to the invaluable experience gained at CRH. Due to its ongoing success, the Way Forward Program will continue to be pursued, helping us address a business need in a cost-effective manner,
  graduate accounting students with invaluable work experience as they start a career in finance.
