that goes with the current trend in fiction (giving
voice to marginalized groups).
• The characters evolved in a more complex and multi-
cultural world (Seminole Indians, Spanish, English,
slaves of African origin) rather than in a classic black
and white archetype.
• The story focuses on various aspects of black
empowerment.
• We also value the economic aspect (slaves as a labor
force that generated significant wealth, and never
reached their hands). This aspect is often overlooked
in the subject.
