From a quiet province of Mexico to a tumultuous State
of the American Union, the pueblo of Los Angeles
experienced a dramatic transition period with a
temporary absence of a legal system, the arrival of
settlers and the flow of outlaws chased out of San
Francisco by the Vigilance Committees or lynch mobs.
SETTING In this newly cosmopolitan town, the new conquerors
of the West collide with the Spanish-speaking
Californios, native Indians and former slaves of
African descent.
Los Angeles, 1850s Here fortunes based on ranching and real estate were
quickly made. It was a time of tumult, violence and
racial animosity, exacerbated by the new Anglo power.
