The Intervention Department is always ready to receive non-English pupils or ESL (English
as a Second Language)pupils to enhance English language skills in various areas such as speak-
ing, reading, writing, and listening. Our Read Write Inc. phonics classes are ideal for our ESL
pupils as they improve their English proficiency for academic or daily life purposes.

One of the first things we do is understand that they need to know how to introduce them-
selves and greet others. We make learning interactive, case-based and experiential.

Over the years, we have had ESL pupils who have become proficient in English.

Some of the strategies we use include:

       ● Involving the children in hands-on activities
       ● Talking to each child individually in every contact
       ● Having the children work in groups and pairs
       ● Encouraging the children to correct themselves and others

       ● Using what is learned in different real-life contexts
       ● Praise and positive reinforcement.
