Blubber Experiment
Blubber Experiment
Have you ever wondered why animals in cold regions
never seem to get cold and remain comfortable without
needing cardigans, coats, or blankets? The Kids Venture
Club embarked on an exciting journey to uncover the
secrets behind these animals’ ability to thrive in freezing
environments.
Our curiosity led us to discover that these animals have
a unique adaptation called “blubber.” Blubber is a thick
layer of fat, also known as adipose tissue, located di-
rectly under the skin of all marine mammals. This fatty
layer covers the bodies of animals such as seals, whales,
penguins, and walruses, providing essential insulation
against the harsh cold. Additionally, penguins have an-
other survival strategy—huddle together to share body
warmth and stay cosy.
To delve deeper into how blubber works, we conducted
a “Blubber Experiment.” This hands-on activity allowed
us to simulate and understand how blubber functions as
an insulator. It was an educational and fun experience
that taught us much about different animals’ habitats
and their incredible adaptations to cold environments.
