‘ roar-some’ Trip
‘ roar-some’ Trip
to the Zoo
to the Zoo
The Year 2 students had an exciting adventure as they participated in a literacy immersion activity at
the zoo. This trip allowed them to step into the shoes of Hannah, the main character in Gorilla by An-
thony Browne, who adored gorillas and longed to visit the zoo. Like Hannah, the Year 2 students were
thrilled with wonder as they explored the zoo, seeing various animals up close and learning more about
their habitats.
The experience was not just about literacy—it
was also a perfect cross-curricular link to sci-
ence, as the students have been learning about
different animals and their habitats. When
they arrived at the zoo, they were thrilled to
observe the unique physical features of the
animals and learn how each adapted to its
environment. The students were especially
captivated by the majestic lion and its roar,
the graceful gazelle with its quick, agile move-
ments, and the striking ostrich towering over
them with its long legs and impressive speed.
They also marvelled at the cleverness of the
hyenas and, lastly, the playful antics of the
monkeys. They appreciated how each animal
was suited to its environment.
Overall, this experience will aid the children
in composing their stories in the author’s
style, using their new understanding of ani-
mals and their habitats as inspiration.
In addition, the trip was an excellent opportuni-
ty for the Year 2 students to connect their love
of reading with real-world learning, sparking
excitement about literature and science!
