The Heart: Nature’s Powerful Engine
n an engaging experiment in the science laboratory, Year 6 children participated in an
exciting investigation focusing on the heart by exploring its significance in living things.
IThey examined a fresh animal heart removed from a butchered cow by carefully
identifying its parts - atria, ventricles, valves - and analysing their roles in the movement of
oxygenated and deoxygenated blood around the body. With curiosity, they learnt how the
heart functions as a powerful pump, circulating oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. The
students discovered how the heart works tirelessly by beating an average of 100,000 times
a day in an adult human’s body to support vital organs and maintain life. This experiment
not only provided a tangible understanding of the heart’s anatomy but also emphasised its
essential function in the life of all living organisms.
