iphtheria is a bacterial infection
caused by Corynebacterium
D diphtheriae. It mainly affects the
nose, throat, and sometimes the skin. It’s
highly contagious and can spread quickly
if not treated or prevented.

How It Spreads
Diphtheria spreads through:
the WHO reported
• Respiratory droplets (coughs and
sneezes)
• Touching infected wounds or over 8,600 cases of
diphtheria worldwide
• contaminated objects
• Close contact with an infected person
