The Power of Music:
Discovering, Developing,
and Delivering Through
Sound
urprisingly, my office is quite close to
the music room, at least as the crow
Sflies. Many an hour goes by with me
being serenaded by the gentle background
sounds of xylophones, clarinets, pianos and
guitars, drifting down from above. It has
become a calming inspiration to me as I
send emails, hold meetings and review pupil
data at my desk. This week, however, the
sound of music has shifted to our school
hall, not as a background tune, but as a bold
statement of the learning, creativity, and
confidence of Abuja Preparatory School.
Our Upper Key Stage 2 pupils have been
working tirelessly in preparation for their
Music Showcase, which will feature
everything from recorder ensembles and
individual vocal performances to xylophone
ensembles - each performance a testament to
the growing skills of our students, and their
confidence and joy in learning music.
DISCOVER DEVELOP
holds such a vital place in education. When a child holds a pair of mallets,
focuses on pitch and rhythm, and strikes a note in perfect harmony with their peers,
far more is happening than meets the ear. They are discovering coordination and
focus, developing fine motor skills and auditory memory, and delivering creativity
and teamwork through performance.
Music connects so many strands of learning. It strengthens memory and
problem-solving, builds discipline and self-confidence, and nurtures empathy
through shared creative experiences. When a pupil learns to listen carefully to the
rhythm of others, they are also learning to collaborate - to take turns, to support,
and to lead. These are precisely the attributes we want our young learners to carry
beyond the stage and into every aspect of their academic and personal lives.
