BOOK REVIEW
Death on the Nile
By: Aarav Karki
Title: Death on the Nile
Author: Agatha Christie
Illustrator: Henry Raleigh
Death on the Nile is a famous book of detective fiction by famous author Agatha Christie, who is
known for her books of detective fiction such as Murder on the Orient Express , Crooked House and
so on.
The story follows 20 year old Linnet Ridgeway who is one of the wealthiest women in England and
heir to a sizable fortune. The time when her best friend Jacqueline "Jackie" de Bellefort asked a favor
from her, she was working to complete the renovations to Wode Hall. Simon Doyle, who is engaged
to Jackie, is unemployed and in need of money. When Linnet meets Simon they fall in love at first
sight and end up marrying each other and travel to Egypt for their honeymoon. As a result of Jackie's
psychological retaliation, Linnet is upset and terrified because she follows her and Simon around on
their honeymoon.Mr Fanthorp, Mr. Ferguson, Mrs. Otterbourne, and Mrs. Allerton are among the
other passengers on the Karnak where each bring their fair share of mysteries and intrigue. And
Hercule Poirot, a renowned Belgian detective, is one of them. Tensions increase as Simon and Linnet
embark on their Nile cruise. The following morning, Poirot and his friend Colonel Race are shocked
by more distressing information: Linnet was killed overnight. Now, Mr.Poirot is left with the task of
investigating the murder and as he digs in, the secrets of all the passengers start unfolding.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and it is a must read for all because of the writer's clever way
of including multiple plot twists along the way and secrets that just makes you want to know what
happens next. My favorite part of this book is when Jackie loses her cool and pulls a gun on Simon in
a saloon, drawing attention to his wrongdoing. In the flurry of activity that follows, Simon, who was
not seriously hurt, receives medical attention while a repentant Jackie, who appeared to be planning
suicide, has her pistol vanish. After all plot twists are uncovered, the book gets really exciting and the
very next morning Linnet is found dead shot by the exact gun that Jackie had. This part is intriguing.
Did someone do this to frame jackie? Or did the gun that Jackie claimed to have vanished never
vanished?
Agatha Christie's way of writing makes the reader completely engrossed into the story and it feels like
the reader is actually there listening to everyone's point of view and trying to uncover secrets and find
out what happened to Linnet. The author has also done a very good job of foreshadowing future events
which makes the readers want to come back for more and know what happens next. The way the
author has perfectly mixed in components like romance, mystery, plot twists, psychology and humor
makes this book one among my favourites.
