Bhutias (main ethinic group in Sikkim)


The Bhutias are a community of Sikkimese people living in the state of

Sikkim in the Noth east India. They are believed to have emigrated

southward from Tibet in the 8 or 9 century. They speak Drenjongke
or Sikkimese. Bhutia refers to people of Tabetic ancestry. There are

many clans within Bhutia tribe. They are mainly mountain dwellers
living in small villages and isolated homesteads. They practice a

terraced agriculture as well as animal breeding. Bhutias numbered

around 69,300 in 2001.
