Issue 108NEWSLETTER OF THE HISTORY PANELSeptember 2021THE INSTITUTION OF GAS ENGINEERS & MANAGERSISSN 1475-617XREGISTERED CHARITY No. 287678TheHistoric Gas TimesThere is a lot of talk in the news recently about the future energy transition away from natural gas to hydrogen. Exciting projects such as HyDeploy, a project which aims to use a blend of up to 20% hydrogen added to the existing gas supply to the 670 houses in the Village of Winlaton for a period of around 10 months. Another project Hynet, aims to produce, store and distribute hydrogen as a fuel, as well as capture and store carbon from industry in the North West of England and North Wales. Whilst Hydeploy avoids the requirement to convert appliances, a more fundamental shift to pure hydrogen, would require another conversion programme, to make appliances and industrial burners suitable for use with pure hydrogen. The cartoon reminds us (who could forget!) that 50-odd years ago we went through one of the world's biggest and fastest conversions. It generated lots of humour among the criticisms, such as this example from Sou'wester, the staff Journal of SWGB.
