Not much was done with gas cookers and fires but a good deal with boiling stoves and water heaters.The company did 90% of the fitting work in Columbo and their inspectors had to approve the work done by native fitters before connecting it. New offices and showrooms were expected shortly, to cope with increasing business. There were about 90 miles of mains, laid at 2 ft 6 in cover.%u201cThe residential quarters of the gas company%u2019s assistants are exceedingly nice, and are provided with the necessary tenniscourt: necessary because in the East, all Europeans must take active exercise to ensure perfect health. It seems strange, but throughout India and Burma every Englishman, whether Civil or Military, has a tennis-court attached to his house; the reason being that such exercise, whether it is liked or not, is essential for health%u2019s sake in these climes.%u201dThere followed an inland excursion to Kandy; %u201cen route the scenery was magnificent and the foliage luxuriant%u201d. Surprisingly, Kandy was lighted by an electricity works belonging to the Columbo Gas & Water Company. It was run by a local committee but controlled by the manager of Columbo gas works, Mr. Edwards.
